1. The Cult of Comfort (1 hour)

OBJECTIVE:

This lecture helps students identify where their desire for comfort is limiting God’s movement in their life by keeping them anchored to ease, safety, and immediate relief. It brings awareness to how these patterns show up in real time and how they interfere with obedience, trust, and spiritual growth.

It also explains how comfort and pleasure-seeking are reinforced through the brain’s dopamine-based reward system, and why practicing delayed gratification and pattern opposition strengthens the ability to resist temptation and walk in alignment with God.

TAKEAWAY:
  • Comfort-seeking can limit where God is able to move in your life

  • Dopamine reinforces repeated choices toward pleasure and ease

  • Delayed gratification strengthens your ability to resist temptation

  • Pattern opposition builds discipline and expands behavioral control

  • Consistent resistance to comfort increases alignment with God

2. Pattern Opposition: Pathway to Fruits of the Spirit (47 minutes)

OBJECTIVE:

Identifying the signs and measures of internal renewal and sanctification through the practice of pattern opposition. As old ways die off through synaptic pruning, new, automatic ways of being should emerge and produce "fruit".

TAKEAWAY:
  • Observation of Change: Signs of renewal include changing preferences (such as a decreased tolerance for negative music or media), a disgust for previously justified behaviors, and a decrease in internal mental chatter.

  • Cultivating the Fruits of the Spirit: Renewal is measured by the growth of specific traits, achieved through targeted pattern opposition:

    • Agape Love: Moving from transactional or conditional giving to selfless, unconditional service and mercy, even toward those who do not "deserve" it.

    • Joy: Developing a deep-seated happiness independent of circumstances by practicing gratitude, especially during difficult "storms".

    • Peace and Patience: Achieving a steady, regulated state through emotional regulation and stopping rumination. Patience is built by choosing peace over conflict several times a day.

    • Kindness and Gentleness: Softening communication styles and body language. Gentleness is fostered through humble service and self-sacrifice for others.

    • Faithfulness: Becoming reliable by pausing before committing to tasks and taking direct ownership of mistakes.

    • Self-Control: Gaining mastery over urges and passions by rewiring emotional states to move from automatic reactions to aware, methodical actions.

  • Addressing "Soul Wounds": The speaker outlines a systematic process for using worksheets to identify negative coping mechanisms and emotions tied to specific people in one's life. This process facilitates forgiveness and repentance, which are necessary for deep-seated change.

  • The Role of Metacognition: True renewal requires being present in the moment rather than fixating on the past or future. This state of metacognition allows individuals to discern truth and potentially operate in the prophetic.

  • Action-Oriented Faith: A disciple is called to change; if life remains the same after following Christ, the speaker argues it is only in name and not in action. Renewed living involves stepping out with boldness and authority where one previously played "small and quiet"

3. Discerning the Voice of God: What Gets in the Way? (35 minutes)

OBJECTIVE:

The session aims to teach participants how to develop and sharpen their spiritual discernment and specifically and how to tune into God's voice, by first understanding what gets in the way of hearing Him (primarily emotional dysregulation) and then taking practical steps to clear those obstacles.

TAKEAWAY:

1. You cannot be emotionally activated and discerning at the same time.

Discernment (from the Greek diakrisis — to distinguish, judge, or separate) requires objectivity. When stress hormones are involved, our ability to think clearly is compromised, and we become vulnerable to the enemy's influence. Being in a constant state of emotional activation is like living in a state of delusion.

2. Emotional regulation is a prerequisite for hearing God.

The renewal process includes learning to get to a regulated, net-neutral state — neither hyperaroused nor hypoaroused. In that regulated state, Satan loses his foothold, and we become able to receive wisdom from God and the Holy Spirit rather than reacting from emotion.

3. Scripture is the plumb line — God never contradicts His Word.

The first test of any spiritual impression is whether it aligns with Scripture. Knowing the Word is essential for testing spirits and confirming what you hear.

4. Understanding the distinct roles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit matters.

The three are not interchangeable. Broadly: God the Father relates to us as a loving, sometimes corrective parent; Jesus is the relational bridge and example; and Holy Spirit is the source of creativity, insight, innovation, and "above-time" understanding for how to navigate daily life.

5. Several things block the voice of God:

Negative self-talk, unhealed soul wounds (which open access to the dark kingdom), religious trauma, the spirit of offense, poor media/content consumption (what you consume opens spiritual doors), and an overly structured lifestyle that leaves no room for the Spirit to move.

6. Practical steps to cultivate hearing God this week:

- Practice emotional regulation (get out of hyperarousal/hypoarousal)

- Engage in pattern opposition to break negative defaults

- Pray against the spirit of offense

- Create space and quiet — stop consuming, start listening

- Embrace spontaneity so the Holy Spirit has room to move

- Listen to/sing worship music to sync with the right spiritual atmosphere

7. The FM Radio analogy — tune to the right station.

God is always broadcasting. The problem isn't that He's silent; it's that most people are tuned to the wrong frequency (distraction, negativity, busyness). The goal for the week is to ask: How do I clear space? How do I regulate myself? How do I get quiet?

8. God is a good Father — He will show up.

The session closes with an encouragement to let go of fear that God won't meet you. He is faithful, and creating space for Him is the only job required.
